Rural Education Alcohol Prevention
Project REAP
REAP is aimed at addressing the beliefs, attitudes and behaviors of the students, as well as the community concerning the dangers and consequences of alcohol and other substances. The project's main goals are to reduce the incidents of alcohol use, increase academic achievement and reduce school "drop outs". In order to do this, programs are being implemented at the Cuero Junior High and Cuero High School campuses.
LifeSkills Training - LST (6th - 8th graders) - works to enhance the student's self-esteem, ability to make decisions, and the ability to resist peer and media pressure. LST is taught as a series of classroom sessions. LifeSkills Training also helps students develop skills in:
Drug resistance skills
Personal self-management skills
General social skills
Reconnecting Youth - RY (9th - 12th graders and their families) - is divided into four major units: enhancing Self-Esteem, Decision Making, Personal Control, and Interpersonal Communication. RY is offered as a credited elective that uses daily class lessons essential for school achievement and student motivation. Reconnecting Youth centers around three central program goals:
Increased refusal skills
Increased school performance
Increased coping skills
Too Good for Drugs - (9th - 12 graders and their families) - is take-home information and worksheets on alcohol and drug prevention for youth and their families. This program also includes alternate activities for the entire family.
Parenting Wisely - PW - is where parents are able to take part in a 3 hour CD/DVD video that allows flexibility in viewing this program. The program is designed for parents with children up to 18 years old. The CD explains different situations and how to become a more effective parent when dealing with these issues.
Creating Lasting Family Connections - CLFC (6th - 12th graders and their families) - is a comprehensive family strengthening, substance abuse, and violence prevention curriculum that helps families become strong, healthy and supportive. CLFC provides parents and children strong defenses against risk factors by teaching:
Appropriate skills for personal growth
Family enhancement and interpersonal communication
Refusal skills for both parents and youth
